Free Carbon Monoxide Detectors Available to Eligible Households
In recognition of Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month this November, the Langlade County Health Department is launching its Safe Air, Safe Homes Initiative to educate residents on the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning and distribute free carbon monoxide detectors to eligible households.
Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless, and tasteless gas that can cause severe illness or death before residents are even aware of a leak. Fueled by fuel-burning appliances, home heating systems, and generators, dangerous levels of CO can build up rapidly during colder months. A working carbon monoxide detector can provide an early warning before dangerous levels of carbon monoxide build up in a home. The Langlade County Health Department encourages all residents to ensure their homes are equipped with functioning detectors.
Free carbon monoxide detectors will be available while supplies last, with a limit of one unit per household. To qualify, households must meet at least one of the following criteria:
· Low-income household
· Older adult (65 years of age or older)
· Family with young children (ages 0-6)
· Pregnant individual
· Individual with a chronic medical condition
· Household that does not currently have a carbon monoxide detector.
Initial distribution will begin at the health department November 3rd-November 6th from 8:30am-4:00pm.
Because supplies are limited, detectors will be handed out on a first come, first serve basis. Additional distribution events at community locations throughout the county are planned and will be announced as they occur.
Residents meeting eligibility guidelines are encouraged to visit during the initial pick up or stay tuned for more dates. For more information or questions contact the Langlade County Health Department at 715-627-6250 or visit langladecountyhealth.org
