Protecting Yourself Against Rising Respiratory Threat

The Langlade County Health Department is encouraging residents to take proactive steps to protect themselves and their families as Wisconsin sees “very high” respiratory illness activity. Respiratory illnesses such as influenza, COVID-19, and RSV continue to circulate in Wisconsin, with cases increasing during the winter months.

  • Influenza (Flu): Highly contagious and spreads mainly through droplets from coughs and sneezes. Symptoms often include fever, chills, body aches, and fatigue. Annual flu vaccination is the best protection.

  • Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV): Common in young children but can cause serious illness in infants, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Early symptoms may resemble a cold but can progress to wheezing or difficulty breathing.

While many people experience mild to moderate symptoms, older adults, young children, and those with underlying health conditions are at higher risk for severe illness. The Langlade County Health Department urges residents to remain vigilant and take steps to protect themselves and their communities. “As we continue to see respiratory illness in our communities, we encourage everyone to take steps that protect not only themselves but also their friends, family and community,” said Karen Marten, Public Health Nurse, Langlade County Health Department.

Preventing the spread of respiratory illness starts with simple, everyday actions.

  • Staying up to date on recommended vaccinations for flu, COVID-19, and RSV (when eligible).

  • Washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

  • Covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow.

  • Staying home when feeling unwell to avoid spreading illness to others.
