Local Data Shows Alcohol Misuse Remains a Major Challenge in Langlade County
The Langlade County Health Department is highlighting new data on alcohol use and its impact on the community, underscoring the need for continued prevention, treatment, and recovery support across the county. The announcement comes as Wisconsin continues to rank among the highest states in the nation for alcohol misuse.
“Alcohol misuse affects families, workplaces, and the health of our entire community,” said Donna Wiegert RN, Public Health Nurse and Substance Use Prevention Lead. “We want residents to know that help is available, and that we’re committed to making resources easier to find and easier to use.”
Wisconsin continues to rank among the highest states for alcohol use, with 24% of adults reporting binge drinking and an estimated $3.9 billion in statewide annual costs.
County Health Rankings places Langlade County within the 22–26% range for adults reporting excessive drinking, similar to many rural counties. Local hospital and EMS partners also report that alcohol contributes to a significant share of injury-related emergency visits. Alcohol misuse remains a top priority identified through local community health assessments.
To support residents, the Health Department has launched a Substance Use Resource Map, offering easy access to prevention programs, treatment providers, recovery groups, and harm-reduction services. Our goal is simple,” Donna said. “No one in Langlade County should have to navigate substance use alone. Whether someone wants to cut back, support a loved one, or seek treatment, there is a place to start.”
