New Effort to Prevention and Reduce Substance Use in Langlade County

The Langlade County Health Department is partnering with two state agencies—the Department of Health Services and Department of Justice—on Real Talks Wisconsin, a new campaign to prevent and reduce substance use in Langlade County. This effort encourages open, honest, and caring conversations about drugs.

“Substance use is a reality in our community, yet it often goes unspoken or is dismissed due to shame and stigma,” said Donna Wiegert, Public Health Nurse. “This barrier can prevent individuals from seeking the help they need. However, we have the power to create supportive, stigma-free spaces centered on hope and healing. It starts with open, honest conversations.

Substance use often involves a mix of drugs. That’s why Real Talks Wisconsin isn’t focused on a specific substance. This effort is built around strategies that can be used to prevent or reduce any type of drug use.

Real talks are based on asking open-ended questions, having empathy, and helping to problem solve.  The Alliance for Substance Use Prevention of Langlade County works closely with Three Bridges Recovery to assure those in recovery feel listened to by our community and have the resources they and their families need to succeed.

“We all have a role in breaking the stigma surrounding substance use disorder,” said Donna. “By educating ourselves on addiction, we can foster understanding, ask thoughtful questions, show empathy, and work toward solutions that support those affected. Remember, the words we choose matter.”
